Vimshottari Dasha is Vedic astrology's system of planetary time-periods -- a fixed 120-year sequence, anchored to your Moon's Nakshatra at birth, that names which planet is considered to be "running" your life at any given point.
Where Western astrology mostly reads a chart as a single fixed snapshot, Vedic astrology adds a timing layer: Vimshottari Dasha ("vimshottari" means "120" in Sanskrit) divides a person's life into a repeating 120-year cycle, split into 9 planetary periods (Mahadashas) of fixed, unequal lengths -- from 6 years (Ketu) up to 20 years (Venus) -- always in the same order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.
Your personal starting point in this cycle isn't your birth date directly -- it's determined by exactly how far the Moon had traveled through its birth Nakshatra at the moment you were born. That's why an imprecise birth time can shift your entire Dasha timeline: the calculation is precision-sensitive in a way most other chart factors aren't.
Each Mahadasha is further subdivided into Antardashas (sub-periods) ruled by each of the 9 planets in turn, giving a finer-grained sequence -- e.g. "Jupiter Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha" describes a specific multi-month-to-multi-year window with its own blended character, distinct from either planet's period running alone.
